Artist Statement
More than any other art form, I use drawing to express my ideas. Drawing brings my ideas of to life, specifically in the form of characters. The characters and their environments in my artwork emote inner strength to overcome hardships. Themes of competing forces resolving their conflicts to coexist are frequently explored in my art, such as the hunter and its prey residing peacefully beside each other.
Conflict and resolution is also portrayed in my work through fantasy characters, such as mythical beings, creatures, and superheroes. Powerful characters are metaphors of the inner strength to prevail, for their heroism is their true power to be victorious when success seems impossible.
I set characters in natural environments because nature, too is a metaphor of conflict in its contrast between beauty and harshness. A recent work of mine depicts creatures thriving in a parched desert, the creatures not only surviving, but dominating. Deserts provide few resources, and lush environments hide deadly animals. Because of their ability to survive in a harsh world, wild animals become superheroes in my artwork, demonstrating dominion over their environment.
Rendering characters and environments with great accuracy is crucial to my illustrations, for it makes them believable. I want my audience to go to in the world I visualize. I choose natural colors and pay close attention to shading to situate characters in environments that represent what people actually see.
The conflicts of nature in my artwork do not portray specifically physical obstacles, but internal human conflict. My work talks about the struggle for man to socialize himself in the world. Many of the characters I draw live among vice-rid-den people, reminding my viewers they must have the strength to repel bad influences in their life. My viewers should take away a sense of how they can use inner strength to overcome internal conflicts to succeed in the world.
